Here is a new take on a project that has been around for a while…clothespin Christmas characters and ornaments!
Here is what you will need to make the little guy above — it’s a quick and easy one for all ages…
- Doll pins (they have rounded tops – you can also use regular push-style clothespins if you can’t find these)
- A glue gun and hot glue sticks
- Stuff to decorate – I used watercolor paint, googly eyes and Tulip Fashion Glitter in gold and white. I also used a little bit of a cotton ball for the tail. Find 1/4 inch sparkly ribbon to go around the neck if you want to hang this on your tree.
OK – here’s how to put it all together:
Use hot glue to secure the three clothespins or doll pins as shown. Line up the clothespins so that the sliced parts are all facing left-to-right. I tilted the “head” clothespin a bit to give it a little character. You will secure with a big glob of hot glue at the neck, two in the middle (at the top and the fat section) and one to attach the rear. I also made a shiny red nose by dropping a glob of hot glue on a piece of freezer paper, letting it dry, and peeling it off. Then I simply added it to the character with some hot glue and painted it red later.
Once your hot glue has set up, paint the body and face brown (or pink – wouldn’t that be cute and girly!) Leave the “antlers” unpainted – We will glitter them later. Use a sharpie to draw a hoof on each foot.
If you did the hot glue nose trick, paint this now. Let all of your paint dry, then apply a thin layer of glue to just the painted parts of your creation, leaving the antlers bare for now. Sprinkle glitter all over the glue. Once this has dried, add glue to just the antlers and use a white-colored glitter for this part.
Once all your gorgeous glitter is dried and your reindeer can be handled, use your trusty glue gun to attach a little cotton tail. Gently roll it between your fingers to make a tail shape. Now hot glue the googly eyes on. How cute is this little guy?
I’ve used a small button for the nose and painted on eyes and added yarn eyelashes- get creative here and use what you’ve got! Maybe your reindeer wants to be a magical unicorn. Add crazy tufts of yarn to give it a mane and use paperclay or even a wrapped wire to look like a unicorn horn and glue that on.
